The Blessed Event

Fifteen years ago, the kaldorei tossed her green locks, eyes glowing, and laughed. “Oh, Rivern. Stop it!” He was throwing the juniper berries she was preparing to the newest litter of cubs he was rearing. The frostsaber kittens tumbled over one another trying to pounce on the seeds. The moonlight shimmered over the well and the breeze rustled the leaves of Nordrassil.
Rivern smiled and looked at his love. He had something on his mind, and he decided it was time to broach the subject. He sat down next to her.
“Tessina, I’ve been thinking. The Sentinels are building up a Stronghold in that place we all thought was destroyed. I’d feel you and the baby would be safer there. Nordrassil and the well are too powerful and alluring. It would be far to the south, and you and the baby would be out of harms way, if there’s ever some unwanted company again. The two of you would have an army at your back!”
She looked up at him from her herb sorting. “No, the baby’s coming soon. We have our lives here. Why would we raise a child so far from here?”
With the sun rising soon, the two of them headed off to cottage to sleep off the day. They settled down and drifted off to sleep. Tessina began dreaming a dire portent her child being born, and sucked away in a whirlpool with a cry, “Min’da!” She perceives her child subjected to grotesque demonic spells and violent, brutal punishments. The young child grows too fast, and Tessina sees even her daughter’s belly swell, hears her screams of birthing, and wakes herself up yelling, startling Rivern.
“Are you okay? It was just a dream.” He smoothed her arm reassuringly.
Tessina looked at him. “Rivern.”
“Yes?”
“You’re right. We’ll go to that new place.”
The two of them spent the next week packing and wrapping up their affairs at Mount Hyjal. They said their goodbyes and set out. Rivern had made arrangements for them to board a boat to the north and make as much of the trip as they could on water. It would cause less trouble for his pregnant wife.
When they set out from Mount Hyjal, a number of night elves accompanied them, helpfully carrying their bags. In ones and twos, the night elves seemed to suddenly remember something they needed to do back at Nordrassil, and had to leave the hopeful couple. By the time they got to the dock to board their ship, it was just Rivern, Tessina, and his two finest frostsabers, Warfrost and Avonlea.

Planning a fresh start in Feralas, they did not bring much. Rivern wanted to continue raising and training the magnificent cats. Tessina was going to continue her work as an herbalist. A few other elves and some Sentinels were there, having just received orders to their new assignment and waiting to board as well.
With the waning gibbous moon sparkling on the water, the Mist Veil was moored before them, being prepped for taking in the new passengers. When she was ready, the dock master shouted “All aboard the Mist Veil!” The anxious couple gathered up their belongings and stepped aboard. A porter took their luggage to stow it in the ship’s hull, and Rivern and Tessina went to find a comfortable place to rest for their journey south.
The Captain, performing his duties, arrived at the passenger cabin to address those who had just boarded and update those who had already been there.
“Welcome aboard the Mist Veil. I am Captain Galind Windsword. If you need anything, you can ask any of our crew. There are also two Sentinels on board to provide security. The ship is built for passenger comfort and deep sea travel, so enjoy your cruise. We will be stopping in Auberdine in 7 nights, passing by Zoram’gar Outpost 9 nights from now. At that point, I will ask all passengers to remain inside the main cabin for your safety. From there, it will be 14 nights to arrive at Feathermoon Stronghold. There will not be any safe ports to stop at until then.”
“It’s a long journey, but this move is going to be for the best,” Rivern reflected as he commanded his cats to lie quietly out of the way of the other passengers. With the number of night elves on board, no one needed to be tripping over a large cat and possibly provoking it to defend itself. “I just hope I do as well with the Frostsabers when we get to Feathermoon Stronghold. It’s a large command, and there should be plenty of interest in them there.”
Tessina smiled at him. “Of course. We’ll be safe there. The baby will practically have an army looking after him or her. And I’ll have plenty of people needing my herbalism. It’s a good move, Rivern. I’m glad you brought it up.”
With that, the ship was loosed from her moorings and they set sail. They had to go around the north coast of Kalimdor, passing Moonglade, before the ship’s course could head southerly. The Mist Veil was built with a “V” shaped hull, minimizing discomfort for the passengers and providing stability in deep sea. She was a great transport ship, and the couple was grateful for feeling very little of the effects of ocean travel as she sailed past tumultuous coasts.
They crossed the narrow corridor of tainted land known as Felwood, both of them relieved they did not have to journey though the corrupted forest. Darkshore was next.
“The Captain said they are picking up passengers at Auberdine,” said Rivern.
Tessina wrinkled her nose. “I don’t know why anyone stays there. And I don’t like the idea of those residents getting on the same boat as us. They ought to take another boat.”
Rivern nodded. “I’ll see if I can talk the captain into not making the stop. I’d feel better if we’d not spend time here so we can get you to Feathermoon faster.” He headed topside to speak to the Captain.

As soon as he left the cabin, the ship struck a large rock hidden beneath the surface with a BOOM! The Misty Veil came to a screeching halt, the passengers frozen in shock as the she howled with her hull beached and cold seawater flooding in. The Sentinels seemed to suddenly appear in the passenger cabin, barking out orders to save their passengers, water rapidly rising at their ankles. A Sentinel grabbed Tessina’s wrist, pulling her out of the cabin. The two frostsabers yowled and hissed, despising the waters soaking into their thick fur, looking around in panic. Passengers were starting to run scared now, and the clamor of the growing hysteria was an awful duet with the acoustics of the shipwreck played upon the rock. Tessina found herself floating in the Veiled Sea. Terrified, she screamed out for Rivern. She felt something grab ahold of her ankle, pulling her down. A passenger was drowning and tried using Tessina for support, pulling her under as well. Tessina, losing what little control she had in the catastrophe, reacted by flailing arms around, kicking off the drowning elf to save herself, and choking on seawater as she went under. Suddenly, her hand made contact with a large furry beast. She instinctively clung to it with all her energy and was pulled towards the shore. As she was guided through the cold water, she felt a warm gush flooding out of her from between her legs, and pain grip her deeply, making her cry out. “Oh, no. The baby’s coming,” the thought registered, “…Avonlea?” She pulled herself closer to the solid, warm creature that was safety incarnate, depending on it as labor befell her in the cold, dire sea. The frostsaber sensed the direction of land, though they were far from it. Tessina grew deathly cold in the water, but eventually they reached the shore, the two huddling together for warmth. The cat licked her for comfort as waves of contractions wracked Tessina. It was dark, but she was soon found by a boomkin from the very place she strived to avoid - Auberdine.
The druid, seeing the cold elf’s swollen belly and saturated dress, put the pieces together. She lifted the weakened elf onto the weary cat, and motioned for Avonlea to follow her. The cat rose with a heavy sigh and obeyed. They walked a short distance to the cave as Tessina, still soaked and cold, cried through another contraction. Once inside the Druid’s cave, the heat from the fire challenged the chill in Tessina’s bones, and she started to warm up, her dress start to drying. The boomkin quickly disappeared, returning with a priestess from Auberdine. She expertly midwifed the birth in the druid’s cave. Eventually, Tessina’s weakness from her long ordeal began to wane. She asked for her husband.
“I was traveling with my husband on the Misty Veil to the new Stronghold being built, when the ship sunk. I’m lucky enough Avonlea brought me to shore. But I don’t know what happened to him. His name is Rivern Frostwind.”
The priestess said, “We have some survivors in Auberdine. Lunaclaw, can you go find him? I’d rather stay here with Tessina.”
Lunaclaw hooted, left the cave, and returned a short time later having found Rivern.
The couple reunited and clinging to one another, tearfully cried out praises for Elune’s blessings for their survival, finding one another, and their new bundle of joy. They named her Luna.
